Diabetes-related Distress and Depression: How, Why and What to do (#18)
How do people feel about living with diabetes, why should we be concerned about this and what can be done about it? This presentation will focus on evidence regarding the prevalence of depression and diabetes-related distress in people with diabetes, discuss relationships between the two and their impact on other outcomes. Effective treatments for depression exist and brief training can upskill health professionals in how to deal with diabetes-related distress when it arises in consultations. Thus, there is a case for routine monitoring of emotional well-being. Building a collaborative relationship, in which emotional support is central to all other aspects of diabetes management, is key to improving both health and psychological outcomes in people with diabetes.
