Serious mental illness effects 10% of pregnant women.(1) Antipsychotic medication is used for a variety of disorders during pregnancy includings bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder. The safety of antipsychotic medication for the mother and fetus is largely unknown. The National Register of Antipsychotic Medication in Pregnancy was established in 2005 as an Australia wide observational study to evaluate the safety of these medications.

As of april 2012 we have followed 136 women to the completion of pregnancy. Gestational diabetes was found in 22.1% of mothers compared with the Australian population rate of 4.6%.(2) Risk factors for the development of GDM in this group including diabetogenicity of different antipsychotics will be discussed. Fetal outcomes in relation to GDM will also be addressed.
