Mental health in diabetes – A collaborative seminar for health professionals (#335)

Introduction:
To raise awareness of GP’s and Practice nurses (in our catchment) of resources available when confronted with patients who have mental health issues.
Aim:
To develop a Diabetes & Mental Health Seminar for GP’s & Practice nurses using a community -focussed multidisciplinary approach
Objectives:
1. To track the progression of management for patients with diabetes and mental health issues
2. To demonstrate what resources and lifestyle modifications available in the community
3. To highlight access to support services and collaborative care.
Method:
1. A working Group (WG) was set up and meetings held to develop the program.
2. WG identified schizophrenia as the topic for the case study.
3. The Mental Health & Diabetes seminar, with the case study was promoted, conducted and evaluated. CME points arranged through RACGP.
Results:
28 participants completed the evaluation. 13% GPs, 13% practice nurses, 4% mental health nurses, 21% nurses, 12% Diabetes Educators , 8% Dietitians, 8% psychologist, 4% social workers and 4% Advocacy Co-ordinators.

Conclusion:

This seminar provided insight into the progression of managing the complexities and barriers of patients with the combination of diabetes and complex mental health needs.
The evening provided practical information for people working in the community including available resources. The panel discussion provided opinions on the need for a structured approach to mental illness in diabetes and highlighted the ongoing need for support and education for health professionals.
